Up on the house top

Have you seen The Santa Clause? You know, the movie with Tim Allen where Santa falls off his roof and he's the new Santa? Remember the scene where (after accepting his responsibility as the new head honcho of Christmas) the elves are excitedly showing Santa their new inventions? A hot cocoa maker in the sleigh, a GPS system, a microphone in his hat the connects him directly to Judy. And all the while he keeps asking, "But what do I do if I fall off a roof?!" Well that's kind of how I feel with Jason's diabetes. We've been taught how to cook/eat for diabetes, how to test his blood sugar levels and I've even received special instructions on how to revive him from a diabetic coma. But as of right now, we have yet to actually be prescribe insulin. So now, after a meal we know his blood sugar levels are higher than they should be. But too bad? I mean really, there's nothing we can do. I feel like we've been perched on top of an icy rooftop with nothing to save us from falling. We have a doctors appointment on June 12th where (cross your fingers) they'll finally prescribe some insulin.

In other news, I was told my blog needed more pictures of me and Jason. I have some from when his family came out to visit a few weekends back, since I am behind on editing by four weddings, I haven't have time to upload them to my computer. So instead, here are some of my family at Disneyland in April! (I know, I know, only 1.5 months later...)

Hailey, aka, Haney

I love this girl. She's the sweetest, most talented, humble girl I know. And sometimes I like to think of her as my little sister. Our moms were mission companions and I have known her since forever and I was so excited to take her senior pictures. I mean, how could I not be, she's GORGEOUS! More on the photo bloggity blog.

An actual update!

Today Jason and I went to the diabetes clinic today to learn how to manage his newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. It was very informative and while this new experience could be a challenge, it's nice to know we have a lot of support through family and doctors. We got a lot of good books and pamphlets, and here was one I thought was very interesting:

Diabetes Etiquette - for people who don't have diabetes

1. Don't offer unsolicited advice about my eating or other aspects of diabetes. You may mean well, but giving advice about someones personal habits, especially when it's not requested, isn't very nice. Besides, many of the popularly held beliefs about diabetes ("you should just stop eating sugar") are out of date or just plain wrong.

2. Do realize and appreciate that diabetes is hard work. Diabetes management is a full-time job that I didn't apply for, didn't want and can't quit. It involves thinking about what, when and how much I ea, while also factoring in exercise, medication, stress, blood sugar monitoring, and so much more - each and every day.

3. Don't tell me horror stories bout your grandmother or other people with diabetes you have heard about. Diabetes is scary enough, and stories like these are not reassuring! Besides, we no know that with good management, odds are good you can live a long, healthy and happy life with diabetes.

4. Do offer to join me in making healthy lifestyle changes. Not having to be alone with efforts to change, like starting an exercise program, is one of the most powerful ways that you can be helpful. After all, healthy lifestyle changes can benefit everyone!

5. Don't look so horrified when I check my blood sugars or give myself an injection. It is not a lot of fun for me either. Checking blood sugars and taking medications are things I must do to manage diabetes well. If I have to hide while I do so, it makes it much harder for me.

6. Do ask how you might be helpful. If you want to be supportive, there may be lots of little things I would probably appreciate your help with. However, what I really need may be very different than what you think I need, so please ask first.

7. Don't offer thoughtless reassurances. When you first learn about my diabetes, you may want to reassure me by saying things like, "Hey, it could be worse; you could have cancer!" This won't make me feel better. And the implicit message seems to be that diabetes is no big deal. However, diabetes (like cancer) is a big deal.

8. Do be supportive of my efforts for self-care. Help me set up an environment for success by supporting healthy food choices. Please honor my decision to decline a particular food, even when you really want me to try it. You are most helpful when you are not being a source of unnecessary temptation.

9. Don't peek at or comment on my blood glucose numbers without asking me first. These numbers are private unless I choose to share them. It is normal to have numbers that are sometimes too low or too high. Your unsolicited comments about these numbers can add to the disappointment, frustration and anger I already feel.

10. Do offer your love and encouragement. As I work hard to manage diabetes successfully, sometimes just knowing that you care can be very helpful and motivating.

Kacey

While I promised an update, don't expect the photo thing to end anytime soon. I have two weddings and a sealing this week plus a couple more shoots I haven't even posted yet. But guess what, I only have three weddings in June, zero in July and two in August. So if you have any business referals, I'd really appreciate those!!

For now, here's Kacey, a darling OHS senior that I had a blast hanging out with/shooting. More on the photo blog.

Meet Trisha. And Charles.

My friend Trisha is getting married. Let me tell you a little bit about Trish. I met her my freshman year and I don't remember how really, but I did. And then we became best of friends. And we had some really fun times. We had a tendency to stay up late, or not go to bed at all, and then go straight to our 9 am Book of Mormon class. I'll be honest, I didn't get the best of grades that summer term, but I had the best time. Now Trisha's getting married and I am ubber excited for her. We took her engagement pictures last week, and there are more on the photo blog, but here are a few:

Bridals

I know, I know. My blog is starting to be really boring with nothing but posts referencing my photo blog. But I've been super unbelievably busy lately. I still have 2 full weddings to process, two senior sessions, an engagement session and this week I'm taking another senior session and a bridal session. Then next week I have three more weddings. No big deal right? To see the latest shoot posted on my photo blog, click here!
